Piece Hall – A transformation

GRAHAM Construction completes £22m transformation of historic Piece Hall

GRAHAM Construction has completed one of its most prestigious heritage renovation projects to date – the transformation of the 18th century Piece Hall in Halifax.

Work has been ongoing since November 2014 to transform the Grade I listed building into a world-class cultural and visitor destination. With restoration work now fully completed on the £22m project, Piece Hall officially opened to the public on August 1 to coincide with Yorkshire Day.

Piece Hall – originally built as a cloth trading hall in 1779, and one of only two still existing in Europe – will feature a raft of independent shops, boutique offices as well as bars and restaurants, a museum, two galleries and a massively improved central square specifically designed and constructed to host a variety of cultural, music and arts events. The courtyard is also home to a new four-level cascading water feature, extensive pavement lighting and bespoke high quality landscape furniture.

Michael Graham, executive chairman of the GRAHAM group, said: “We are very proud of this project, which has transformed a much-loved and iconic building into a true 21st century visitor destination.

“From our first involvement in this development, we have appreciated just how much it means to the people of Halifax and the wider Yorkshire region. It has been a challenging project, but one which has delivered on its promise to create a stunning facility for the Halifax community, and which will significantly support the local economy.”

The Piece Hall transformation project has been funded by Calderdale Council with a generous £7million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Piece Hall Trust will operate the historic site as an independent charity, bringing the building to life through retail, leisure, events and education.

Suppliers included landscaping materials supplier Hardscape and M&E firm Stothers Ltd.

Gary Hughes, GRAHAM Construction regional director, added: “Throughout the project we have aimed to engage with the local community, maximising education, employment and social opportunities, as well as opening up the building to visits from interested parties during the renovation.”
