Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Southport
Gourmet Burger Kitchen launched in 2001 and from its original home in Battersea has now grown across the UK and further afield. At the heart of the premium burger revolution, the success of GBK has been underpinned by its commitment to creative and innovative food within a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
GBK currently boasts over 80 restaurants in the UK alone and takes pride in serving a variety of handcrafted burgers made using the freshest ingredients and sauces made from scratch. Alongside this award-winning food offering, each GBK site is individually designed with a refreshing décor that takes inspiration from the local area.
One of the major GBK openings in 2017 was at Southport’s Ocean Plaza in February 2017. The restaurant was quickly heralded as a welcome addition to the hospitality scene in the area. The design of the restaurant has been a particular standout and was recently shortlisted for a Casual Dining Award.
The design of GBK Southport was carried out by long time design partners MorenoMasey. Rodrigo Moreno Masey commented:
“GBK Southport is a new restaurant for the brand. The brief was to create a space that would also take inspiration from its location in a traditional British seaside town, whilst staying true to the GBK brand. A key requirement was to have a takeaway hatch that would allow for a milkshake on the go and would at the same time increase street presence. This was achieved by creating references to the traditional seaside fun fair whilst incorporating some more industrial and gritty elements that are integral to the GBK visual identity.
“The restaurant is set in large open space, share by different elements to give customers different dining experiences within the one room. The central booths are a reminder of the funfair swings with their chained seats, the lighting domes imitate the tops of the big wheel boats whilst the backdrop wall, with its stencils and lights, makes allusion to the traditional Helter-Skelter. These are all subtle but together create a vibrant scheme with a rich colour palette.
“MorenoMasey successfully worked within GBK’s design brief to make a connection to its seaside location and heritage, creating a strong point of difference, whilst still holding on to the brand personality. The design features some interesting talking points which makes this design fun without being too contrived. GBK is performing well in this new territory and the design has certainly resonated with the local client base in Southport.”
The opening of GBK Southport resulted in 20 new jobs being brought to the area. Popular choices on the GBK menu include the Major Tom, a 28 aged beef patty, crispy bacon, beef ketchup and blue cheese slaw; The Taxidriver, a beef patty topped with American cheese, house onion ring, Cajun relish, smoked chilli mayo, dill pickle and salad; and the classic GBK Cheese & Bacon burger.
In addition to their strong working relationship with GBK, which their Glasgow restaurant won a Casual Dining Award for in 2016, MorenoMasey has worked on a number of award-winning hospitality projects including Nando’s Old Street.
