The National Theatre’s popular craft beer bar, The Understudy, will celebrate the start of summer with the return of its shipping container pop-up, The Otherstudy, launching 17 April.
Located on the riverside in front of the National Theatre, The Otherstudy will bring an exciting 21 week roster of weekly tap residencies to the South Bank. Some of the UK’s most exciting new breweries will be showcased as well as celebrating popular favourites.
Always keen to celebrate the glory of British-made craft beer, the residency programme kicks off with Wild Beer Co, an independent brewery based in Somerset. The takeover will showcase the brewery’s finest creations from signature easy-drinking classics through to more challenging draughts. As the season progresses you can look forward to visits from the likes of Cornish hop addicts Verdant, Nottingham’s Liquid Light, and the mad scientists at Little Earth Project.
From 1 May, additional pop-up bar and food offerings will start to join The Otherstudy to create a superb summer destination for all. Visitors will be able to enjoy freshly cooked food and delicious drinks whilst soaking up the buzzing South Bank atmosphere.
The pop-ups will run alongside the National Theatre’s annual River Stage Festival, a free five week arts and performance celebration of live music, theatre, dance, drag, DJs, club nights and workshops.
The food and drink line-up is as follows:
Delicious sourdough pizzas including vegetarian and vegan options, made to order from our traditional wood-fired oven housed in a 1970s Citroen Van. It is the perfect accompaniment to a cold beer and hot summer’s day.
Tasty grilled sandwiches made with British cheeses and plenty of cheesy sides. Last year we introduced The Cheese Iron, which serves delicious grilled cheese sandwiches, and this year we are proud to announce that the new menu will feature cheeses from the incomparable Neal’s Yard Dairies. We are also introducing our version of the Cubano, with pork belly, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, gherkins, and jalapenos. Not only that but our chefs have perfected the ultimate beer cheese sauce, which will sit atop our new loaded New-Jersey inspired disco fries accompanied by crispy bacon, and fried shallots.
Our vintage van serves a range of Northern Bloc’s irresistible ice creams, made with 100% natural ingredients, including gluten free and vegan options. They offer a selection of Northern Bloc’s innovative ice cream and sorbet flavours, which are all 100% natural with no additives, colourings, emulsifiers or artificial flavourings.
Wine and cocktails on tap and ready to go. Wine Box offer a range of carefully selected and predominantly locally sourced, organic or vegan wine with a large focus on sustainability and biodynamic wines. All wines served on tap are environmentally friendly and doing their bit to save the planet! Cool down with a frosé, made using Northern Bloc sorbet.
Join the Apothecary Bar this summer, as they showcase the best of iconic and contemporary regional produce from across the UK in unique home batched cocktails including Pancha, a delicious blend of Northumberland Alnwick rum, Ceylon Arrack, Velvet Falernum, Lady Grey tea, ginger, elderflower.
Jon Traynor, Food & Drink Operations Manager at the National Theatre, says: “As it sits right on the Thames the National Theatre is blessed with amazing riverside views and ample outside space – so rare in London – which we feel deserves the best possible culinary compliment. Between Campfire’s pizzas, the amazing toasties coming out of Cheese Iron, and Northern Block’s ice creams and sorbets we feel there is something for everyone. Similarly with refreshment, whether you are after a refined cocktail, a bizarre craft beer, organic British wine, or a frozen sangria to sip as you watch the sun set over the river, you’ll find what you are looking for”.
