The Cottage in the Wood

The Cottage in the Woods- Whinlatter forest near Keswick- Cumbria

Housed within a former 17th Century coaching inn in the heart of the Whinlatter forest near Keswick, The Cottage in the Wood is a fantastic country hotel and restaurant.

Owned by husband and wife team Liam and Kath Berney, The Cottage in the Wood boasts delicious food, excellent accommodation and some of the best views in Cumbria.

In January 2013 a project was undertaken to give the restaurant a makeover. Work reached completion on the scheme in early February and transformed the restaurant into a very inviting dining facility, which perfectly complements the hotel.

Lattimer Construction was the main contractor on the project, whilst award winning interior architecture and furniture designer Fidget Design was the interior designer. Fidget Design work on a diverse range of projects, from luxury hotels to leisure complexes, and has earned a reputation for being one of the most creative interior architects in the UK.

Commenting on the project, Fidget Design Interior Architect, Allison Tordoff, said:

“The Cottage in the Wood is a fabulous hotel and restaurant, situated in a remote location in a beautiful part of the Lake District. The site is perched up high on top of a hill and looks down at the most amazing views of the valley. The restaurant has a large conservatory, where guests can take in the breathtaking views, all whilst sampling the fantastic – and award winning – cuisine.

“Our brief on this project was to rework the interior of the restaurant, in order to give it a dynamic new look. It’s all about textures, bringing the outside in and connecting with the natural surroundings, including a natural stone water feature. In addition, we also addressed a few acoustic issues which were achieved through the introduction of textured wallpapers, soft furnishings and blinds.

“We added some banquette seating to increase the number of covers in the restaurant and finished the project off by including some beautiful feature wall lights, along with some LED up-lighters.”

Allison added:

“Liam and Kath are very passionate about what they do and who they get involved with their projects and the work completed on the restaurant is the icing on the cake for The Cottage in the Wood.

“This was our first time working with Lattimer Construction and we found them to be a great contractor and an excellent problem solver. Lattimer Construction has worked with Liam and Kath on a number of occasions and we were very pleased to have worked with them on this project.”

Led by Head Chef Ryan Blackburn, the restaurant uses the best possible produce, from local suppliers, to create some of the best dishes in the region. Ryan has recently been awarded Cumbria Life Chef of the Year, which recognises his commitment to promoting the Cumbrian ‘larder’. All of the restaurant’s suppliers have longstanding working relationships with farmers and produce growers, allowing Chef Blackburn to present a truly special menu.

All rooms in The Cottage in the Wood are en-suite, and boast a range of features including internet connections, flat screen digital TVs and superb finishes.

Allison said:

“The Cottage in the Wood is in one of the best locations in the UK and to know I have been involved with a scheme that raises the profile of this site gives me such a buzz. The project is also local to us and we are always pleased to support schemes and businesses that will benefit the local area.

“Liam and Kath looked at their image and their branding and put in place a scheme that could really enhance what they have to offer. The Cottage in the Wood will attract repeat visitors, which will be great for their business and the tourist trade in Cumbria and that is something everyone should be very proud of.”
