Sheffield’s new Hampton by Hilton Hotel

Work to transform a former police station in Sheffield into a luxury hotel is currently underway.

The £9 million project comprises the refurbishment of the former South Yorkshire Police Station into a 142-bed contemporary Hampton by Hilton Hotel. As well as a fantastic array of bedrooms, the hotel will also boast a restaurant, gym, and meeting and conference facilities.

Denizen Contracts Ltd is the main contractor on the project, whilst Falconer Chester Hall Architects is providing all architectural services. Denizen Contracts Ltd has a good working relationship with the Hilton brand, after working on previous hotels in the Hilton portfolio, including Doubletree by Hilton Chester and Hampton by Hilton Exeter Airport.

Work began on Hampton by Hilton Hotel Sheffield in May 2012 and is currently on schedule to reach completion in August 2013. Once work is complete on the eight storey hotel, the building will be managed by specialist hotel development company Sanguine Hospitality Limited.

Chairman of Hotel Sanguine Hospitality, Simon Matthews-Williams, said:

“We are delighted to be able to restore the building and to ensure it continues to tower over the city’s skyline as a quality hotel.”

The creation of the new hotel is expected to create 55 full and part-time jobs in the hospitality sector.

Commenting on the creation of the new hotel, Denizen Contracts Ltd Project Manager, Martin Bambrick, said:

“Hampton by Hilton Hotel Sheffield is being created through the conversion of two linked buildings situated within the West Bar area of the city. The first building was built in the 1960s, whilst the second was erected in the 1980s. The refurbishment process is pretty straight forward and comprises mostly of a mix of internal demolition works and fit-outs.

“We are working in both buildings at the same time and have stripped the structures back to the frames, installing new ceilings and walls, along with associated works.”

Although work on the project is making good progress, some unexpected asbestos has been uncovered in the 1960s-built building, so this is carefully being removed by Denizen Contracts Ltd.

To date, new walls have been installed within the buildings, the mechanical and electrical services are underway and plastering works are currently taking place on the site.

A number of external works will complete the refurbishment project, and includes the installation of some soft landscaping and associated signage. A visitor drop-off point is also being constructed outside the front entrance and whilst this is being installed a traffic management system will be put in place.

Discussing Denizen Contracts Ltd’s relationship with the Hilton brand, Martin said:

“It is tremendous to be working once again with Hilton on this new Hampton by Hilton Hotel in Sheffield. Hilton is a very high-end, high quality chain of hotels and we really enjoy working with them.”
