Situated on Cromwell Road, close to Harrods and Harvey Nichols in neighbouring Knightsbridge, Xenia is a 99-bedroom boutique hotel complete with a bar, healthy fine dining restaurant and multi -event space.
The name Xenia comes from the ancient Greek word for hospitality, during a time when Greeks believed that gods could take up human form and could become any one of their visitors – so every guest had to receive the same level of hospitality.
Instilling this ethos from the beginning, Xenia Hotel General Manager, Mario Ovsenjak, told Premier Hospitality:
“Ancient Greek’s working in the hospitality sector treated all their guests like gods in order to leave a lasting impression on them. This is exactly the belief that we work towards at Xenia. We have a very high level of respect to each and every one of the guests that walk through our doors.”
“We wanted to create something truly special with Xenia. It sounds like a cliché, but we really want Xenia to become a home-away-from-home. All the furnishings were carefully selected during the design stages of the hotel and we really are proud of what we have achieved.”
Xenia opened its doors for the first time in May 2013, after a two-year refurbishment and reconfiguration programme. Prior to opening as Xenia, the hotel housed the Majestic.
John Cirmaci Builders was the main contractor on Xenia, whilst interior design was provided by Mr Al Nakeeb.
“Converting the building from what it was into what it is now, was understandably a long process. We wanted to ensure that we got everything just right. Not just for our guests, but also for us.
“The colours, the materials, every aspect had to be perfect. The owner wanted to create something to be proud of. He personally selected the majority of fixtures, fittings and materials used. Xenia is, therefore, presented as stylish, luxurious yet unpretentious environment with many unique features.”
Upon entry into Xenia, guests are treated to the sight of a gorgeous lobby which sets the tone of the rest of the hotel. Decked out with Tom Kirk chandeliers, the lobby includes interactive tablets at the Concierge and a 65” voice activated TV.
Throughout the hotel’s 99 rooms Xenia presents a range of guest spaces, from Classic, Executive and Deluxe Rooms through to suites, all spread across six floors.
Classic Rooms have been designed to maximise space and include a double bed, a 32” TV and a rain shower. Meanwhile, Executive Rooms include a king sized bed, seating area, a 40” flat screen TV and a Nespresso coffee machine.
Deluxe Rooms include a luxurious king sized bed, sofa seating, a 40” flat screen TV, hand woven cashmere blankets and a Nespresso coffee machine. All rooms include guest directory tablet technology, air conditioning, a safe and complimentary Wi-Fi, toiletries and tea making facilities.
Suites meanwhile benefit from a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, a deep bathtub and marble steam room and bespoke designer furnishings. The suites offer panoramic views across the city and include gallery windows and electronically operated blackout blinds.
Taking a step away from the bedrooms, guests can take advantage of what the hotel classes as the ‘ultimate dining experience’, the Evoluzione, a mix of food, art and science. The Evoluzione is a concept in dining which is demonstrated throughout the hotel’s conservatory restaurant and al fresco terrace.
“Evoluzione is a first for the UK and is based upon the Italian idea of healthy eating. Evoluzione applies a scientific approach to Italian dining, so that each dish is designed to be good for guests for a variety of different reasons. There is also a calorie count for each dish. The kitchen brigade is headed by Mr Pasquale D’Ambrosio who showcased his skills on RAI UNO on a number of appearances.”
Meanwhile, the Lounge is able to cater for guests throughout the day, whether this is for a much needed morning coffee or something a little bit stronger during the evening. An all-day menu is available at Xenia’s Lounge, whilst the hotel’s terrace bar, the Living Wall, comes alive from 5pm until late to offer both indoor and outdoor relaxation, serving speciality cocktails and offering cigar humidor.
Additional facilities at Xenia include the Event Room, an accommodating space that is perfect for private parties, cocktail receptions, family gatherings and corporate events. The Event Room is a flexible space, that includes a dedicated bar, a private patio area, a cinema surround system and an LG 84” TV.
Meanwhile, if a dinner party is more the order of the day then Xenia’s Private Dining Room is ideal for parties of up to ten guests. Xenia’s Private Dining Room includes state-of-the-art technology, bespoke Italian furniture, handmade Bohemia wallpaper, and benefits from natural light.
“This is the first Xenia of its kind and it has been a fantastic experience to be involved with the opening of such a unique hotel. As a General Manager, opening a new hotel is a completely different experience from taking over an already operational hotel.
“We are proud of the hotel and our aim is to make all the local residents proud of the hotel too. There has been a lot of work undertaken to regenerate the surrounding area and we wanted to make sure that what we have done with this hotel contributes to improving what this district of London has to offer.”
Xenia is just a short walk from Kensington Gardens and is close to the Natural History Museum, V&A and the Science Museum. The hotel is also accessible from both Gloucester Road and Earls Court tube stations.
