Brigadiers

Brigadiers Bloomberg is set to be the ultimate playground, redefining the idea of eating, drinking and socialising in the city. A fusion of design styles, it blends references from Indian club culture and Mumbai art deco heritage with the Gurkha military legacy. The barbecue restaurant and drinking tavern has opened at Bloomberg Arcade in the City of London and has been carefully designed in collaboration with BradyWilliams Studio to create an inviting capsule of bygone days.

The concept, developed by co-owners the Sethi family, is inspired by their grandfather, an original Brigadier, and his 4th Gurkha Rifles ‘brigade.’ London based BradyWilliams, led by Shayne Brady, brought together this rich history and added influences from India’s vibrant club scene. The result from the design studio is relaxed and playful in its execution marrying twenties design with the easy nature of a communal tavern.

“Undoubtedly what has been so exciting about designing Brigadiers is the fact that we have taken one, large blank space and transformed it into this glamorous microcosm of boisterous fun, with five separate rooms and two private dining rooms. This is a destination designed to allow you to indulge in play and to socialise in so many different ways; from cheering your favourite team with a crowd to practicing your poker face with a small knit group,” said Shayne Brady, Director of BradyWilliams.

Like any club, the space has been divided into numerous destinations, each with its own unique identity and experience of old world escapism. The influence of the Brigadiers history is drawn out in the colour palette throughout; the ceremonial uniform inspired twill reds, boot polish greys and brass tones. Each room houses carefully sourced design treasures, including family heirlooms and bespoke furnishings with private dining rooms offering relished seclusion with decadent details such as custom cigar pipe wallpaper.

Having previously worked with JKS on past projects, BradyWilliams knew to ensure that Brigadiers interiors are as memorable as the food. Catering to the cities demands the reception plays host to Brigadier’s resident shoe shine attendant – the new ultimate luxury. An indulgent moment taken out of the working day for self-care and shoe maintenance lightens the spirit in minutes. Artwork and memorabilia have been selected for this space to provide a witty vignette into the narratives of city life.

Over scaled swivel bar stools make the main bar the ultimate vantage point to while away the hours. With a hint of St. Pauls dome in the background, a nod to reality in this inviting capsule of bygone days, internal planting along the glass façade allowed the transition from modern day architecture to old world escapism. Intimate booths and smartly concealed screens allow it to transform form an intimate yet extravagant inn to a casual, lively sports bar.

Adjoined to the bar, yet very much its own jewel, the Billiards Room truly is the heart of the club. Shayne was inspired by Art Deco streamliners of the 1920s for this room, it is a contrast to the warm timbers and leathers of the other spaces. Clad in polished black and chrome, with a leopard print inspired carpet, this slick space is ideal for late-night drinkers. The most discerning of guests can indulge with ease, as this room features a novel yet ingenious whiskey vending machine.

The restaurant in its octagonal shape mirrors the bar with corner booths allowing for intimate dining experiences or larger livelier gatherings. The central seating is the ultimate spot to observe the entire space with views of the Pot Luck, Billiards and the Tap Room. Animal motifs climb the walls in the form of custom tiles with monkey bust alabaster wall lights used in four transition areas connecting the spaces. Finally, a fitting tribute is a large portrait of the Sethi’s grandfather above the fireplace.

BradyWilliams made a bold decision with The Tap Room; the reimagined tavern interestingly, from a design perspective, has no seating. This standing only space fuels conversation, fluid movement and allows the focus to remain on the beers that are handpicked and chosen seasonally. Bespoke ceramic wall tiles were created for this energetic space adorned with formidable Indian Rhino whilst stained glass and ribbed timber evoke the taverns of old.

The Pot Luck is a relaxed space with one large sharing table that can be hired as a private space. Planting and mirrors layered with trellis creates a room that feels spacious and airy. This sun lounge inspired room has a casual feel with a large screen and allows for ample ‘watering’ opportunities with its self-pour beer station.

Brigadiers opened on 6th June 2018.

Noble Russell and Brigadiers

Noble Russell was delighted when JKS Restaurants and BradyWilliams invited them to provide all the bespoke furniture for their latest venture, Brigadiers, an Indian barbecue restaurant, and drinking tavern, at Bloomberg Arcade, London. Noble Russell has previously worked with both clients on the stunning restaurant, XU.

The elegant interior design by BradyWilliams references the Indian art deco style and features: a standing tavern, formal bar, restaurant, private dining rooms and pool room amongst others, each with their own unique identity and experience.

Noble Russell was asked to produce bespoke furniture for each of these rooms. In total, over eighty metres of tailored banquette seating was required for the restaurant and bar. This has been constructed in various configurations but each has been upholstered, by their specialist craftsmen, in leather and have stained and lacquered show-wood details.

The stunning hand-crafted dining tables, found throughout the restaurant, feature highly polished Madrona Burr veneered tops with specially designed acid-etched logo discs inserted into the centre.

The art deco inspired dining chairs have been custom-made in beech and have been stained and lacquered to match the rest of the furniture, and are upholstered in matching leather with bronze handles on their backs.

Twelve barstools have been specially created to complement the central bar. They have upholstered seat pads and backrests in matching leather and show wood details, and stand on powder-coated bronze swivel bases with footrests.

Stand-out pieces in the range of furniture Noble Russell have created, include a bespoke shoe-shine chair and a private dining room games table with baize insert and removable top.

The range of furniture was completed on budget and installed by Noble Russell’s expert team in time for the soft opening at the end of May.

Noble Russell is a contract furniture company specialising in the creation of exceptional bespoke products. They have dedicated themselves to over 25 years of furniture design and production, providing customers with the highest quality service.
