Millwood Celebrate International Women's Day

To mark International Women’s Day on Friday 8th March 2019, Millwood Designer Homes is highlighting the important roles women play in their business and the expanding opportunities within the construction sector. As a typically male-dominated industry, more women than ever are undertaking incredible opportunities within the extensive range of careers available in house building. Millwood’s first female site manager, 29-year-old Charlotte Cox has recently been promoted to Assistant Project Manager, assisting in the management of several current and forthcoming sites across Kent, Sussex and Surrey.

Following in the footsteps of her dad who worked in construction all his life, Charlotte completed a Construction Management degree at Westminster University, before joining Millwood in 2015. Over the last three and a half years, she has worked her way up from Assistant Site Manager, earning two promotions. Charlotte comments: “Where possible, I think it’s very important for companies to promote from within. At Millwood Designer Homes it takes time for employees to learn how to achieve the high standards and quality the company requires. I feel such a great sense of pride, seeing a development through from start to finish.”

Charlotte adds: “At university I was the only woman on my course. I’m used to working with all male colleagues the majority of the time, I haven’t known any different. At the moment, I believe around 75% of construction roles are male dominated, however from my experience women taking more technical roles in construction is slowly increasing. In any job, to work as a team you need to play on individual strengths, whether it’s a completely male dominated environment or not. I don’t expect to see the numbers of males and females completely evening out, however, I’d like to see more women in a range of roles.”

“My personal highlight at Millwood so far, has been the construction of six houses in Sutton Valence, Kent, as it was my first project to solo manage, therefore I learnt a lot about having to make important decisions myself on site. I feel I have really flourished at Millwood with the support of my Senior Site Managers and Directors. I am looking forward to completing my master’s degree in Quantity Surveying this year and continuing to learn and expand my knowledge at Millwood.”

Nick Stonley, Managing Director at Millwood Designer Homes comments: “International Women’s Day is the ideal opportunity for the industry and our company to celebrate the significant contribution made by our employees. It is fantastic to see more women making the move into the housebuilding sector and especially within more technical roles. At Millwood, we have an incredibly talented and diverse team and support all staff including Charlotte, throughout their careers, encouraging, motivating and promoting within the company wherever possible.”

Millwood currently has a range of individually designed homes available across Kent, Sussex and Surrey. For more information, please visit www.millwooddesignerhomes.co.uk.
