Cornwall-based Transferable Skills Training has been voted as the winner of RGB Building Supplies’ 30th Well Built Community Fund, and now has £1,000 to spend at its Launceston branch.

The charity received the most votes following a public poll, where it was up against Perranarworthal-based Boot Up Outdoor Learning and Construction Futures Devon in Exeter.

Transferable Skills Training (TST) has been providing vocational education and training for vulnerable young people and adults since 2004. It specialises in helping individuals who have struggled in mainstream education to learn skills linked to jobs available in the South West.

For over eight years, TST has provided construction skills training, where young people gain a Level 1 or 2 qualification. In addition, they receive a CSCS card.

TST will be using the Community Fund donation to extend its carpentry workshop area, allowing them to cater for more learners and offer nationally accredited courses.

Donna Pinhey, construction skills teacher, commented:

“The extended workshop will be fully accessible to cater for people of all abilities and needs, and will make such a difference to the training we’re able to provide. We’re a not for profit organisation, so rely on receiving grants and support to help young people gain new skills. Thank you to RGB for supporting TST, and to everyone who voted for us.”

Adam Davis, Branch Manager at RGB Launceston, added:

“With the construction industry facing a skills shortage, to celebrate our 30th Community Fund we wanted to support a group that helps young people learn a trade, and we’re delighted to help Transferable Skills Training continue its fantastic work. I was delighted to visit and learn more about their project, and look forward to returning to see how they use the donation.”
