On the 17th October, former winner of the Apprentice, Alana Spencer, launched her brand-new bakery in Aberystwyth following the relocation of her luxury cake brand, Ridiculously Rich by Alana, to her hometown.
The launch, organised by local company Haka Entertainment, was the perfect way to introduce the local community to her business. Guests were entertained by harpist Mared Emyr and local choir, Ger y Lli, and were also treated to a champagne reception sponsored by Booker Aberystwyth, served (of course) with a selection of cakes from the Ridiculously Rich range!
Guests included local and national media, Alana’s family and friends, current stockists and a few recognisable faces such as fellow Apprentice winner Sian Gabiddon and British Bake Off contestant Michelle Evans-Fecci. The night was hosted by TV and radio star Ifan Evans and filmed for S4C show Heno. Welsh Assembly Presiding Officer Elin Jones AM spoke enthusiastically about the impact of Alana’s move to Aberystwyth on the local community before Alana’s father regaled everyone with tales of a young chocolatier, smothering the walls of her parent’s country kitchen in chocolate and cream before starting her business at the age of just 17.
Alana herself took to the stage to thank everyone for their ongoing support in making her bakery dream a reality. Alana also explained how important being very much a Welsh business is to her, and even delighted the guests with a short speech in Welsh before the evening was rounded off beautifully by a performance by a young duo from Penglais School.
Speaking after the launch Alana said: “The bakery has been something I have been dreaming of for a long time. My business now has its own home and I am so happy that I have been able to keep the business here, in my home town of Aberystwyth. The support we have seen from the local community has been incredible, especially at the official launch where everyone had so many kind words and well wishes. Having the freedom of production and dispatch will allow us to grow faster and work with even more businesses, from smaller local ones to large national ones. We have already been in discussion with a number of retailers who are very keen to stock our current products and hopefully some of the new ones that are in the pipeline!”
The business supplies a number over 50 franchises and a large number of retailers all across the UK, and their first ever shop has been opened as part of the new bakery, which will be open every Friday between 11am and 7pm, offering the much-loved core range as well as exclusive bakes for Alana’s local customers.
Alana told us “The shop had an incredible first day and eventually we hope to employ someone to run the shop for us but whatever happens, having our own bakery means more freedom to create different product ranges and how we are able to meet the needs of our customers.”
The opening of the bakery and shop has instantly created four new roles with hopefully another two positions being created by the end of the year including an apprentice with a view to encouraging and helping the successful applicant to obtain a qualification whilst working at the bakery.
“We have been so fortunate to find such an amazing and hardworking team already and were blown away by the number of applications we received.” Said Alana. “It feels great to be helping to bring new opportunities to Aberystwyth and hopefully the new bakery and shop will increase trade and the busier, we get the more staff we can employ.”
With big plans for 2020, Aberystwyth is the perfect base for Ridiculously Rich by Alana to expand and help put Aberystwyth and Wales on the food map!
