Murphy Group

Established in 1951 by John Murphy, J. Murphy & Sons Limited has developed into a leading global, multi-disciplined engineering and construction company with a turnover of £780 million. Specialising in pipelines, process, marine, tunnelling and piling, Murphy Group invests heavily in their substantial holding of plant, equipment and facilities.

Providing a wide range of construction services to infrastructure sectors including rail, water, power and natural resources, the company directly employs over 4,000 engineers, professional managers and skilled operatives across the globe. Murphy operates in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, USA, Australia and the Middle East.

As an infrastructure specialist, Murphy Group is able to respond to the challenges of any project while ensuring that they provide clients with a consistently high quality service. Offering a speedy and valued response to clients’ emergencies, reputable Murphy is the contractor of choice for many when unpredicted problems present themselves.

The innovative self-delivery model that Murphy Group uses gives clients the assurance that they can provide a safe, reliable and cost-effective service. The company makes a significant investment in its plant and its people, in order to offer a highly-skilled, experienced workforce who utilise modern and well-maintained equipment. This way, Murphy can offer a ‘one stop shop’ service for clients on their most complex projects and can be on site and ready to work straight away.

Murphy has a long and distinguished record of delivering varied rail projects and a fundamental understanding of the complexities involved in all types of railway construction. The company has experience in working on large infrastructure developments for clients such as Crossrail, Network Rail and Transport for London.

The company’s skills in project management, pre-construction, supply chain management, and plant and transport management enable them to successfully deliver key infrastructure projects. Murphy Group can deliver to the most difficult of projects, offering full turnkey solutions and pre-construction and project management capabilities that are highly regarded as industry leading by both their clients and peer group.

Working closely with clients, the company ensures that each and every project is done right first time by joining forces with clients from the early stages of the project and continuing to deliver excellence on site thereafter.

A fundamental strength of Murphy Group’s rail business is its ability to implicitly understand clients’ key drivers and requirements. Due to the company’s ability to deliver projects directly, Murphy is able to respond quickly – which is why many clients choose to call them first in critical circumstances.

Murphy Group boasts an extensive portfolio, from high-profile, multi-disciplinary schemes to community-based work, across a variety of sectors. Working with a broad range of clients in the UK and across the globe, Murphy Group maintains the aim to improve infrastructure for all users.

At Murphy, innovation is something that is constantly considered and valued. The company encourages employees to think freely and creatively – whether in the UK or overseas – in order to provide safe and sustainable solutions for complex infrastructure problems.

John Murphy, founder of the company, started this culture of innovation when he was among the pioneers who introduced ready-mixed concrete batching plants to the UK over 60 years ago. This revolutionary visionary, a part of Murphy’s DNA, can be seen today in the company’s award-winning projects. These include the Crossrail Thames Tunnel C310, London Olympic Park cable tunnels, the Fockersperger Spider Plough technology, and its Never Harm culture programme.

Rail projects that the company has carried out include the national electrification programme (NEP) bridge reconstructions; Farnworth Tunnel; the Birchwood access for all scheme (AFA); Chorley Tunnel and flying arches; and Channel Tunnel rail link advance utility diversions.
