Nottingham-based civil and electrical engineering firm McCann recently marked a major milestone for one of its longest-serving employees – after Contracts and Technical Director Steve Adcock, collected an award from the Institute of Lighting Professionals (ILP) for 40 years service to the ILP and wider lighting industry.
The award recognises Steve’s contribution to the lighting industry after starting his career in 1973 as an apprentice electrician for W.J. Furse – before moving to Nottinghamshire County Council as a Design Engineer.
He first joined McCann in 1980 before rejoining the council in 1983. But after a four-year stint, returned to McCann to take up a permanent role in 1987 as a contracts manager. Over the last 30 years at McCann, Steve has worked within roles encompassing lighting and electrical design, installation and commissioning, maintenance and renewal schemes and more recently, highways civils and drainage schemes
He now occupies the position of Contracts and Technical Director for the business – playing an active role in major projects, LED replacement and term maintenance projects as part of McCann’s schemes across the country. Alongside his day-to-day work, Steve has also been a member of the ILP since 2002 and is currently branch treasurer for the Midlands region.
The award ceremony took place at Nottingham’s Trent Bridge cricket ground and was attended by members of the ILP as well as Steve’s colleagues from McCann – with the award presented by Managing Director, John McCann.
Following the presentation, John said, “Steve is widely respected not just within our company, but throughout the lighting industry as a whole,”.
He continued, “He is a very popular member of the team – bringing years of experience and wisdom, as well as being a great role model to our apprentices. On behalf of the wider team, I would like to pass on our sincere thanks to Steve for his many years of service as well as huge congratulations on receiving this deserved recognition from the ILP.”
For Steve, receiving the award came as a complete surprise as he was attending the midlands region AGM, and admits he did not realise it was 40 years since he first joined the industry – “Time really does fly when you’re having fun, and in those early years it was a lot of fun!” said Steve.
“Joking aside, I thoroughly enjoy my job and I’ve been fortunate enough to work on many landmark projects alongside highly valued colleagues. I have been treated as one of the family and I’m proud to be so. I would like to pass on my thanks to the ILP and my colleagues at McCann for always supporting me within the roles I’ve occupied throughout my time with the company.” added Steve.
